Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was spotted by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production called Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello wasn't asked to be a part of the Mickey Mouse Club cast in its first season and much at her Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' displeasure. Disney was right to make this choice, since Funicello soon became the major character in The Mickey Mouse Club. Also, she had her own story of adventure, Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello was forced to record records to realize her potential as a teenager. Annette didn't like her voice, however Disney used Tutti Camerata, who went on to have a successful career in the recording industry. Funicello eventually became accustomed to recording and loved the time she spent with Camerata who was one of the rare arrangers of their 40s who knew the basics of early rock. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. It was the very first of a string of films about beach parties that quickly became extremely popular.
